Programs

The MJCCC operates many regular and sessional cultural, musical, and fitness programs. You can find a copy of our program registration form at the bottom of this page.

Here is a current listing of our programs for Fall 2008 (dates will be updated as information becomes available):

If you are between the ages of four and 15, consider entering the

16th Kanagawa Biennial World Children’s Art Exhibition

 

“The Kanagawa Biennial World Children’s Art Exhibition has been held every two years since 1981.  Held in Kanagawa Prefecture to the south of Tokyo, this event exhibits children’s art from all over the world, and is intended to use the power of painting to foster the dreams and creativity of today’s young children who will go on to become the leaders of tomorrow.  The exhibition is also intended to further understanding of the world’s diverse cultures and differences in global lifestyles.”

 

Applicants must be between the ages of four and fifteen as of April 1, 2010.  Entrants should mail their entry (applications by email will not be accepted) to be received between September 1 and November 30, 2010.

Jean Maeda is a native Winnipegger who has lived for 25 years in Japan.  She studied Japanese classical dance in the Hanayagi School for 15 years and received the name Hanayagi Suzukino in 1985.  She also took courses with the Japan Folk Dance Federation and received their first level folk dance qualification.  Jean has performed in ten classical dance recitals in Japan, doing dances such as Fuji Musume, Kanda Matsuri and Ohmi no Okane.  She has also participated in Folklorama here in Winnipeg and in the Powell Street Festival in Vancouver.

Children will learn Japanese folk dances and other traditional dances according to their age and level of experience.  Accepting new students up to the age of  12 years. 

(Materials fee of $5.00 will be collected at the first class)

A combination of agility, strength, and mental discipline, judo is a Japanese martial art form that offers children a chance to gain skills and self-confidence.  Students will practice fundamental movements, postures, and holds as they learn effective judo techniques.

The craft of kasa (Japanese umbrella) making.  Paper folding with a difference.  Learn how to create an ornamental kasa using everyday household paper.

Participants are requested to bring their own scissors and craft glue.

Practice the art of ikebana, or “making flowers come alive.”  Use techniques and traditions of this Japanese art form to create your own arrangements with flowers available in Manitoba. 

Flowers available at the first class at a cost of $8.00. (Optional)

REGISTER ON TIME!  REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS ONE WEEK BEFORE YOUR FIRST CLASS.

Classes may be cancelled if insufficient registration is received by the deadline.

All registrations not received on these dates or by mail will be subject to a $5.00 late fee.
