Given the devastating news of the earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan, we sincerely hope that your friends and relatives are safe and accounted for. Thank you for all of your thoughtful emails and phone calls offering your concern and assistance at this difficult time.

 

Well-known Canadian organizations currently taking donations include the Canadian Red Cross Society, World Vision Canada, Doctors without Borders and Save the Children Canada. Information on how to donate money can be found on their websites. For a list of other relief effort organizations, and for more information on Canada’s response to the earthquake in Japan visit the Government of Canada’s Foreign Affairs and International Trade web site.

 

Shaw Cable has generously offered the Japan TV channel (channel 514) to all current Shaw subscribers who have the digital box. Also, for those using Shaw telephone, Shaw Cable is kindly providing free long distance calls to Japan until further notice.

MTS offers free calls to reach loved ones in Japan

No charge for MTS residential and small business landline customers in Manitoba to make calls to Japan until May 11, 2011

 

WINNIPEG, March 18 /CNW/ - MTS Allstream Inc. announced today it will provide free long distance calling to Japan for all MTS residential and small business landline customers in Manitoba. MTS will apply this retroactively to March 11, 2011, so residential and small business landline customers who have made long distance calls to Japan following the earthquake will automatically receive a bill credit.

 

"With the ongoing complexities of the devastation in Japan it's important that people are able to reach one another," said Kelvin Shepherd, President, MTS. "We hope that free long distance calls will enable more of our MTS customers to get in touch with their loved ones at this critical time."

 

MTS residential and small business landline customers will be able to reach friends, family and colleagues in Japan free of charge until May 11, 2011.

 

Consistent with MTS policies on long distance calling, this offer is intended to support the personal calling needs of customers and is not available for resale or other enterprise commercial.

Our office learned that the BMO and Western Union are waiving their fee for international money transfer to Japan.

While our office cannot officially endorse these announcements, I would like to share the information with you.

Western Union has not sent us their news release but called us yesterday to inform us of their intent.
